Bushwhacks in the Presidentials
WASHINGTON the cone is often bushwhacked in winter when trail gets well covered, ADAMS I have been up Adams Slide which is now a bushwhack and also looped over Quincy Adams, JEFFERSON and MADISON I can't remember any but MONROE I came up the lee side of the ridge one windy day. I have seen backcountry skiers on EISENHOWER and JEFFERSON choose their own routes down snowfields.
Almost bushwhacked EISENHOWER and CLINTON when we couldn't find Crawford Path down .
Never bushwhacked JACKSON.
ISOLATION is another peak with frequent bushwhacks. Circling from the col near Engine Hill to avoid 2 crossings is almost routine (see post by Peakbagger on the forum). Going up from near where you hit the trail to the col N of Isolation shortens the route a lot. Another option is to go up from the shelter to the col S of Isolation.
Bushwhacks on Moosilauke and the Kinsman Range
I have never bushwhacked MOOSILAUKE but used 2 abandoned trails.
Richard Clark & I bushwhacked from Kinsman Pond Trail to N-S KINSMAN col the weekend after the Blizzard of 78, another time I went around by the trail upwards but down from the col.
Never bushwhacked CANNON (too many cliffs) but went up Tucker ski trail from near Bridal Veil Falls.
Bushwhacks in Waterville Valley and Sandwich Range
Had to bushwhack PASSACONAWAY from Camp Rich when I couldn't find trail, have also been up abandoned Downes Brook Slide trail.
Bushwhacked to N TRIPYRAMID-M TRIPYRAMID col from the W, only to find ridge trail broken out.
Never bushwhacked WHITEFACE except for inability to follow trail after ice storm, there seem to be trails from every direction.
Bushwhacked TECUMSEH to avoid ski trail before the regular trail was relocated.
Richard Clark did a trip up N ridge of E OSCEOLA over to OSCEOLA, then down from col, I later did the bushwhacks on separate days. Gene Daniell led a group up OSCEOLA via the old phone line from Tripoli Road near W Osceola.
Bushwhacks in the Wildcat-Carter-Moriah Range
I have twice done the bushwhack from Imp Trail zag back to 19 Mile Brook trailhead, but Richard Clark once bushwhacked straight up CARTER DOME from junction of Carter Dome Trail & 19 Mile Brook, then down from S-M CARTER col.
On MORIAH, Gene Daniell once led a trip up Stony Brook, bushwhack down from Mt Surprise hoping that brook could be crossed. I repeated it years later after a bridge was built.
Never bushwhacked WILDCAT, except for bypassing ice on trail up WILDCAT D.
Bushwhacks on Cabot and Waumbek
Richard Clark & I bushwhacked WAUMBEK from the abandoned Priscilla Brook Trail (see note by Audrey on the Lost Trails site).
Bushwhacked from CABOT to Horn and to Bunnell Notch, there are trails there now.
